Ken's bad luck = Amelia's good luck

Ken rode his bike to work today, as he often does, but today he got a flat tire on his way to work and couldn't fix it (ironic because it was National Ride Your Bike to Work Day).  He called me to come pick him up, I put Amelia in the car looking like she she'd just woken up (because she had), and left Sophia sleeping (it sounds bad, but Ken was only 5 minutes from the house and we were only gone for about 15 min).

On our way back to our house, we passed a yard sale just down the street from our house selling used bikes.  Ken and I have been wanting to get Amelia a tricycle, but haven't found one on Craigslist yet.  We weren't about to pay the $40-$80 that they retail for in stores, but thought $10-$20 on Craigslist was reasonable.  Today, however, we snagged a great tricycle for only $5 - yep $5.   And Amelia loves it . . . she just has to learn how to pedal, steer, and pedal/steer together and she'll be all set for the summer!

 

Complete Randomness

• When I drive by a pawn shop that has children's bikes out front, it always makes me wonder how they got there.  a) "Johnny, if you don't behave, we're taking your bike to the pawn shop." b) Someone is so desperate for cash that they have to get rid of their children's bikes.  c) I can't think of a good reason that they'd be there.
• Today I was in the middle of fixing dinner and I decided I wasn't in the mood for what I was fixing.  I hate it when that happens.
• There is a musical group I like called "Voice Male" - a group of returned missionaries who sing Accapella.  The other day on Pandora, I decided to add "Voice Male" to a station I was listening to.  When it rotated to a rap song, sung by a group of gangsta wanna-be's, I realized I had chosen "Voice Mail", instead of "Voice Male".   Kind of funny, but I don't know how to get that group out of my station now.
• Ken is determined to get Amelia to say "delicious" because he thinks it will be cute.  I think it's hilarious how often he can use that word on any given evening.
• We have a children's movie that Amelia likes with caterpillars named "Hermie" and "Wormie".  Tonight Amelia was outside doing yard work with Ken and came to show me "Hermie".  When she opened her hand, she had a worm curled up in the palm of her hand.  It took all of me not to say "Yuck!  Drop that worm!".

What do you do on Mother's Day?

roast marshmallows . . . of course!

Amelia wasn't so sure about the roasting part, but she loved eating them.  And my obsessiveness for cleanliness is starting to rub off on Amelia - she didn't seem to like the marshmallow on her fingers.

Ken roasted the perfect marshmallows for me . . . poor Sophia didn't get any, but she didn't seem to mind.

Random Happenings

• Despite the snow and ice storms we had, some of our garden survived the winter and is now growing better than it did last summer.  We were able to use the parsley all winter, have already had chard twice and are watching the celery to see if it will grow tall enough to eat.
• And speaking of vegetables, just when I think Amelia doesn't like meat, she loved eating chicken off of the bone.   Maybe she's not a vegetarian after all.
• And speaking of eating, I love that Sophia is old enough to eat solids.  But once again, I am reminded of how much I hate food mess.  Amelia is finally eating relatively mess free, but it has started all over again with Sophia.
• I have a variety of cookware, but it seems like I use the same pan(s) daily.  Does anyone else get tired of cleaning the same pan over and over and over?
• Lately Amelia has started bringing books with her to bed.  Not just one or two, but almost every book from her bookshelf.  She doesn't seem to mind that there is barely room for her, or that books fall off the bed or onto her in the middle of the night.
• Sophia is getting great at entertaining herself.  I put her toy box next to her, and pretty soon she has every toy out of the box and on/ around her lap.
• Yesterday I made an impulse purchase.  I was at Trader Joes - a store I find very hard not to make multiple impulse purchases - and found an item I was sure we would all enjoy . . . cocoa almond spread.  It's like Nutella, only made with almonds, instead of hazelnuts.  And it is yummy!  After putting it on his ice cream, Ken has already warned me that the jar is likely to get used up fast.
• I was reading a friend's blog last night, and she commented that she and her husband had had their first overnight trip without their 9-mon old son.  Sadly, I realized that I have never spent the night without my children; Ken has, but I haven't.  I think I need to change that.
• We're on day #5 of sunshine and the forecast is sun for another 5 days - yeah!
